The Third Trimester

Just 8 weeks away from meeting a tiny human, the third Trimester hits different. It is basically counted from week 28 to week 40 of the pregnancy.

Dr. Sarada Mamilla, Senior Consultant Obstetrician & Gynaecologist at Yashoda Hospitals and regarded by many as the best doctor for normal delivery in Hyderabad, explains that the third trimester is the most intense yet rewarding part of the pregnancy where baby undergoes rapid changes and the growth of the baby accelerates.

As a women approach last eight weeks of her pregnancy, she has to learn how to care for her body and understand what to expect and it is very essential for a healthy and confident delivery.

What happens during Third Trimester?

  • Physical discomfort: Baby gains weight, organs mature and due to the increasing movements of the baby inside the Uterus, there might be a physical discomfort to the mother.
  • Back ache & Pelvic Pressure: As the Baby grows, the Uterus expands which may lead to severe back ache and Pelvic Pressure. Pelvic exercises helps to relieve the pain.
  • Swelling in the Feet & Ankles: Water retention is common. The Mother needs to get hydrated and should avoid standing for too long in this phase.
  • Shortness of breathe: The Uterus grows along with the baby and this pushes the diaphragm upwards which causes breathlessness. Breathing exercises and maintaining the posture helps with controlling the breath.
  • Difficulty in sleeping: The Mother has to sleep on the left-hand side to avoid difficulty in sleeping as sometimes the positioning might get difficult. Also, anxiety can disturb the sleep.
  • Frequent Urination: This is one of the serious issues that we cannot avoid as there would be pressure on the bladder. This can be controlled by consistent pelvic exercises.
