Non Descent Vaginal Hysterectomy is a type of vaginal hysterectomy that is performed in case of a prolapsed uterus i.e. when the uterus has descended into the vagina.
The patient would either be administered general anesthesia or spinal anesthesia. Then a catheter is placed in the patient’s bladder. The surgeon then makes an incision in the patient’s vaginal wall to reach the abdominal cavity.
Then the bladder & bowel are carefully moved away from the uterus, blood vessels & tissues are detached from the uterus & are sealed closed. The uterus in then detached from the ovaries & fallopian tubes. The uterus is then removed & absorbable stitches are made to control the bleeding. The top of the vaginal canal is sealed.
Post surgery, the patient would be in the recovery room for a few hours. Most patients can go home on the same day.
Generally, it takes about 6 weeks for the patient to recover completely & get relief from symptoms. The patient is likely to have constipation, spotting & vaginal discharge during this time.

Non-descent vaginal hysterectomy (NDVH) is a procedure to remove the uterus through the vagina without abdominal incisions.
It is performed even when the uterus is not prolapsed and is commonly used for:
The uterus is removed through the vaginal route and the tissues are closed with absorbable stitches.
The NDVH procedure is performed under anesthesia through the vaginal route.
Steps include:
The top of the vagina is then closed with dissolvable stitches. Recovery in hospitals is usually quick.
Recovery after NDVH is generally faster compared to abdominal surgery.
Mild spotting, discharge, or constipation may occur temporarily and usually improve with time.
NDVH is generally safe, but like any surgery, it carries some risks.
Possible complications include:
These risks are uncommon when performed by experienced surgeons.
NDVH is recommended when the uterus needs removal but is not significantly enlarged or prolapsed.
It is often chosen for:
This approach avoids abdominal scars and allows faster recovery. A gynecologist decides the best method based on individual evaluation.
