Hysterectomy is a surgical procedure in which the uterus and, in many cases, the cervix are removed. After the hysterectomy is done, women do not menstruate or cannot bear children. The surgery is recommended for several medical conditions such as uterine fibroids, endometriosis, adenomyosis, cervical cancer, uterine cancer, or ovarian cancer.
Dr Sarada Mamilla explains that depending on the surgical approach used, hysterectomy is categorized into four main types.
Abdominal hysterectomy: In abdominal hysterectomy procedure, the uterus and sometimes the cervix are taken out through an incision made in the lower part of the abdomen. Since it's an open surgery, the incisions are more extensive compared to other methods. This procedure is opted for when treatments for cervical cancer, uterine cancer, ovarian cancer, uterine fibroids, endometriosis, and adenomyosis are not effective and require surgical procedures. This is the traditional open surgery with a larger incision in the belly. This method offers the surgeon better access and visibility during complex procedures. but recovery takes about 4–6 weeks. Patients experienced more pain and the scar remains visible.
Vaginal hysterectomy: The procedure in which the uterus and the adjacent tissues are removed via the vagina rather than abdominal incisions is called Vaginal hysterectomy. It is recommended in conditions like uterine fibroids, gynecological cancer, uterine prolapse, and abnormal uterine bleeding. One of its key advantages is that it leaves no visible scars and generally allows for a quicker recovery, usually within 2 to 4 weeks. The procedure is not suitable if the uterus is enlarged or if the patient had multiple abdominal surgeries.
Laparoscopic hysterectomy: Laparoscopic hysterectomy is an advanced procedure compared to vaginal and abdominal hysterectomy. This is a minimally invasive procedure. In minimally invasive surgical method where a laparoscope, a thin tube with a camera, is inserted through small incisions in the abdomen to remove the uterus. The procedure helps with faster recovery. Recovery period is usually 2–3 weeks. It is not ideal for very large fibroids.
Robotic hysterectomy: Robotic hysterectomy is an advanced procedure, and it is done using robotic technology to remove the uterus. The surgeon performs the surgical functions using robotic arms and a console, which gives a magnified view of the surgical site. It is very precise with minimal bleeding and less pain. Recovery takes upto 2-3 weeks. Dr Sarada Mamilla is now offering Robotic hysterectomy surgery in Hyderabad.
Choosing the right type of hysterectomy depends on multiple factors, especially when you are already dealing with health concerns.
Each method of hysterectomy has its pros and cons, and recovery time. The best choice depends on your medical condition, your body, and your surgeon experience.
Dr Sarada Mamilla notes that there is no one-size-fits-all answer. Your health history, uterus size, past surgeries, and personal preferences all play a role. A thorough discussion with your gynecologist can help you make an informed and confident decision.
