What is Laparoscopic Hysterectomy?

Laparoscopic Hysterectomy

It is a minimally invasive procedure to remove the uterus. The procedure involves making a tiny incision in the belly button & inserting the camera through the laparoscope.

The images are reflected on the tv screen allowing the doctor to see the patient’s reproductive organs. The doctor then makes two or three more incisions in the lower abdomen to insert specialised instruments used in the removal of uterus.

In some cases, ovaries also need to be removed due to the patient’s family history or ovarian cancer or abnormal growth on the ovary. In others, ovaries stay inside & the patient does not need any hormones after the surgery, nor does she have any hot flashes.

Further, in some women, the cervix remains in tact. But in such cases, the patient needs to get regular pap smear screenings.

If the patient is having the surgery for endometriosis or pelvic pain, the chances of pain reduction are much higher when cervix is removed.

Dr. Sarada Mamilla is the best doctor for Laparoscopic hysterectomy. She has successfully performed numerous laparoscopic gynaecological surgeries. If you have been advised a hysterectomy, consult Dr. Sarada Mamilla to understand your options better.

Who is advised a Laparoscopic Hysterectomy?

Most patients who need a hysterectomy for abnormal uterine bleeding or fibroids, may be good candidates for a laparoscopic hysterectomy. However, it may not be the best option in some cases like when the uterus is larger than a four month pregnancy or if the patient has had any other surgeries in her lower abdominal region.

How is it better than an abdominal hysterectomy?

A laparoscopic hysterectomy only needs small incisions resulting in less pain, less blood loss & less scaring. It also requires a much shorter hospital stay of just a day. Recovering from laparoscopic hysterectomy is also quicker taking no more than a couple weeks, which an abdominal hysterectomy takes 4 to 6 weeks.
